Aims of The Writers’ Fund:
- To serve and encourage excellence in creative writing in all the languages used in Ghana.
- To raise public awareness of the pivotal role of literature in shaping, preserving and developing a society’s identity and cultural life.
- To lobby educational institutions at home and abroad to secure residencies, scholarships and research opportunities for Ghanaian writers.
- To work to ensure that Ghanaian writing is well represented in the curriculum in schools and universities both at home and abroad.
- Support the initiatives of the Ghana Association of Writers.
Initiatives:
- Revival of the GAW prizes for writers, primarily the following:
- The Kweggir Aggrey Award for authors who have contributed significantly to the development of Ghanaian Literature
- The W.E.B. DuBois Award for the best collection of short stories
- The Nelson Mandela Award for the best collection of poetry
- The Kwame Nkrumah Award for the best first novel
- Annual sponsorship of two outstanding Ghanaian writers to represent Ghana at international literary festivals.
- The creation of prizes for writing in local languages as well as for translations from local languages into English and other international languages.
- The creation of a literary agency to handle negotiations with international publishers on behalf of Ghanaian writers.
- The promotion of Writer-In-Residence schemes at cultural establishments such as the National Theatre and also Fellowship schemes in educational institutions.
- Creation of a benevolent fund to allow committed writers to take time off to complete projects that are deemed of high cultural value.
